Opal Ring

Opal is a captivating gemstone renowned for its unique play-of-color and diverse array of hues. By nature, it is amorphous hydrated silicon dioxide (SiO₂·nH₂O), containing a variable amount of water (typically 3-10%, sometimes up to 20%).

 Opal's most striking characteristic is its ability to display "play-of-color" or opalescence – a vibrant, iridescent shimmer that shifts with the viewing angle. This phenomenon is caused by the diffraction of light on ordered microscopic silica spheres within the stone. The body color of opal (the primary background) can range from transparent, white, gray, and yellow to orange, red, green, blue, violet, and even deep black.

Key varieties of opal:

• Precious Opal: Highly valued for its vibrant and intense play-of-color against various backgrounds (from white to black).
• Fire Opal: Distinguished by its rich, translucent to transparent body in yellow, orange, or red hues. It may exhibit play-of-color, but is primarily prized for its dominant body color.
• Common Opal / Potch: Lacks play-of-color, but can be attractive due to its body color, patterns, or transparency (e.g., milky, woody, hyalite).
• Boulder Opal: Thin layers or veins of precious opal naturally adhered to its host rock (typically ironstone).
• Matrix Opal: Precious opal that fills pores or fissures within the host rock, creating a "matrix" pattern.
