Gold Ring with Verdelite

Verdelite – a captivating variety of tourmaline mineral, distinguished by its rich palette of green hues, from delicate spring greens to deep, saturated emerald tones. This valuable mineral primarily forms in igneous (especially pegmatites) and metamorphic rocks. Due to its durability, verdelite crystals are also often found in river deposits. Its name, derived from the Italian "verde" (green) and Greek "lithos" (stone), aptly reflects its vibrant coloration.

Major verdelite deposits are located in Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the USA (California, Maine), and African countries (Namibia, Nigeria, Mozambique). Verdelite is renowned for its unique optical properties. When cut en cabochon, it can exhibit the "cat's eye" effect (chatoyancy) – a silky band of light that shimmers across the surface, caused by parallel fibrous inclusions.

Verdelite also displays strong pleochroism: the stone can change its shade of green (for example, from yellowish-green to bluish-green) depending on the viewing angle. Thanks to its beauty, sufficient hardness (7-7.5 on the Mohs scale), and variety of hues, verdelite is highly valued in jewelry making for creating rings, pendants, earrings, and other adornments. It is also cherished by mineral collectors for its perfect crystal form and rich color.

Transparent, gem-quality crystals are particularly desirable. Historically, verdelite was used in ornamentation, notably during the Victorian era in mourning jewelry as a symbol of hope.
