Prase Quartz, often known simply as Prasem, is an attractive variety of macrocrystalline quartz distinguished by its characteristic green color. This coloration is due to tiny, often needle-like, mineral inclusions, most commonly green actinolite, but hedenbergite, chlorite, or hornblende may also be present. These mineral inclusions give the stone its unique texture and visual interest, making each specimen one-of-a-kind. Prasem's shades range from delicate lime green to rich onion green, depending on the type, density, and distribution of the inclusions.
Unlike chrysoprase (a variety of chalcedony colored by nickel), prasem's green hue originates specifically from these visible micro-inclusions of other minerals within the quartz crystal. Thanks to its allure and considerable hardness (7 on the Mohs scale), prasem is valued in jewelry making. It is used to create original cabochons, beads, pendants, and other adornments. The stone exhibits a vitreous luster, and its polished surface is smooth. The unique patterns created by the inclusions can manifest differently depending on the lighting, adding depth to the stone.
