Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich (SiO₂) lava rapidly cools, preventing the formation of a crystalline structure. It is an extrusive igneous rock, known for its characteristic glassy luster and smooth texture.
Most often, obsidian has a rich black color, but brown, green, and gray varieties also occur, sometimes with unique patterns or optical effects, such as 'snowflake' (with white cristobalite inclusions) or 'rainbow' obsidian (with colorful iridescence). A key characteristic of obsidian is its conchoidal fracture – its ability to form very sharp edges when broken.
This very property made it an exceptionally valuable material for ancient civilizations. For millennia, obsidian was used to craft tools and weapons: arrowheads, spear points, knives, and scrapers. Archaeological discoveries of obsidian artifacts attest to developed trade routes and the high skill of their creators.
Today, obsidian remains a popular material. Thanks to its relative hardness (5-6 on the Mohs scale), beautiful luster, and lack of cleavage, it is used in jewelry making, primarily for cabochons, beads, and inlays. It is also crafted into decorative items – polished specimens, figurines, and decor elements.
