Nuummite

Nuummite – a unique and ancient mineral, estimated to be billions of years old, making it one of the oldest known on Earth. It is primarily mined in Greenland, in the Nuuk region, from where it derives its name. This opaque stone, typically black or dark gray, fascinates with its characteristic iridescence – vivid flashes of color against a dark background. These flashes, reminiscent of the northern lights, are most often golden, green, blue, yellow, and sometimes red or copper.

Nuummite owes its visual effect to microscopic acicular inclusions of amphiboles – primarily gedrite and anthophyllite – which create a complex internal structure that refracts light. This captivating play of colors and its rarity make Nuummite a valuable material for collectors and jewelers. Sometimes Nuummite is referred to as the “sorcerer's stone” or “philosopher's stone” due to its mysterious appearance.
