Kunzite is an exquisite and relatively rare gemstone, a pink-to-violet variety of the mineral spodumene (lithium aluminum silicate). It is named after the prominent American gemologist George Frederick Kunz, who first described it in detail in 1902. This stone is prized for its delicate hues, ranging from pale pink to rich lilac and violet, often exhibiting pleochroism – a change in shade depending on the viewing angle.
Kunzite primarily forms in granitic pegmatites, where slow-cooling magma conditions facilitate the growth of large, sometimes gigantic, transparent crystals. Its elongated prismatic crystals often display distinct longitudinal striations and a characteristic vitreous luster. Major deposits are found in Afghanistan, Brazil, the USA (California), Madagascar, and Pakistan. Thanks to its appealing palette and good transparency, kunzite is a popular choice for creating unique jewelry pieces. Its Mohs hardness (6.5-7) makes it durable enough for wear, though its perfect cleavage in two directions requires careful handling during cutting and setting, as well as gentle care in the finished piece. With quality faceting, kunzite exhibits excellent play of light and color saturation.
An important characteristic of kunzite is its sensitivity to prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and high temperatures, which can lead to gradual discoloration (fading). Therefore, jewelry with kunzite should be stored away from bright light.
