Feldspar is not a single mineral, but a large and extremely important group of rock-forming minerals, making up about 60% of the Earth's crust. They are the true architects of rocks! The group includes numerous varieties, the most famous of which are divided into two main subgroups: potassium feldspars (Orthoclase, Microcline, Sanidine) and plagioclases (a series from Albite to Anorthite, including Oligoclase, Andesine, Labradorite).
Feldspars impress with their variety of colors: from classic white, pink, and gray to yellow, greenish, and even blue hues. Some varieties exhibit captivating optical effects: bright iridescence (labradorescence) in Labradorite, a gentle moon-like glow (adularescence) in Moonstone (Adularia), and the sparkling schiller effect in Sunstone (a variety of oligoclase or orthoclase). These minerals are primarily formed in igneous (granites, basalts) and metamorphic (gneisses, schists) rocks, as well as in pegmatites, where large and well-formed crystals are often found. Feldspar deposits are widespread throughout the world, including Ukraine, which boasts significant reserves, particularly of decorative Labradorite and feldspar-rich granites.
Due to their prevalence, variety of forms, colors, and unique optical properties, feldspars are key objects for mineralogical collections – from classic crystals to striking specimens with iridescence or adularescence.
