Dumortierite is a charming and relatively rare borosilicate mineral, named after the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier, who first described it in the 19th century.
It is highly prized by collectors and jewelers for its rich shades of blue – from sky blue to deep indigo and violet-blue, although pink and brown specimens are occasionally found. The mineral often forms fibrous or radial aggregates, giving it a unique texture.
Dumortierite primarily forms in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks, such as gneisses and schists, as well as in some pegmatites, often under conditions of high temperatures and pressure. Thanks to its significant hardness (7 on the Mohs scale), dumortierite is quite scratch-resistant, making it suitable for use in jewelry, although its brittleness requires careful handling.
Particularly attractive are specimens with a "cat's eye" effect (chatoyancy), where a silky band of light shimmers across the stone's surface as it is turned. This effect is best displayed when cut en cabochon. Its unique color, rarity, and occasional optical effect make dumortierite a desirable addition to mineralogical collections and an exquisite material for creating original jewelry.
